What to Look For When Choosing a Counsellor

These days, there are more qualified counsellors in Kent up and running than ever before. Which on the surface can be a positive thing, given the way in which it means there are always service providers available when needed. But at the same time, it can also mean being well and truly spoilt for choice when the time comes to select one specific counsellor.

As far as the experts are concerned, choosing at random does not represent a sensible way of going about things. The reason being that contrary to popular belief, all counsellors are most certainly not performing to the same high standard and nor are they able to deliver the same kind of value for money. Of course, there’s more to quality counselling than cash alone, but you still want to know that you are getting what you pay for.

What to Look For When Choosing a Counsellor

So with this in mind, what follows is a simple outline of a few important boxes to tick, when it comes to choosing the counsellor for any given purpose:

1 – Experience

First of all, this is a field in which experience counts for a great deal. While experience alone doesn’t necessarily guarantee fantastic counselling services, it is certainly one of the building blocks of professionalism. The reason being that the longer the counsellor has been in business and offering their services, the more experience they are likely to have with cases similar to yours. Each case may be fundamentally different, but the more experience they have in any given area, the more capable they will be of adapting their experience and expertise to your particular case. So while it’s not to say that newcomers to the industry are necessarily to be avoided, those with plenty of years (or even decades) behind them usually represent the best possible choices.

2 – Expertise

Speaking of expertise, it is perfectly possible for a counsellor to be spectacularly capable in a wide variety of areas, though still be completely and totally unsuitable for your particular case. The reason being that while all the experience in the world in the field of gambling addiction is all well and good, it doesn’t necessarily bode well for the counsellor’s first ever sex addiction patient. Likewise, they may be fantastic when it comes to couples counselling, but this doesn’t necessarily mean they all the right person to turn to when it comes to concerns with regard to drug addiction. As such, rather than simply making the assumption that any given counsellor will be suitable for your particular needs, it is in your best interests to look carefully into their specialism and expertise, before going ahead.

3 – Customer Feedback

As is the case with all other services available to the general public these days, it is incredibly rare to come across a counselling service provider for whom there is not plenty of feedback doing the rounds. For reasons of confidentiality, it’s not as if they will be able to divulge the details of past clients and the specifics of their cases. Nevertheless, they should at least be able to produce the ratings and recommendations of their past customers. These will often be available on the web site of the service provider itself, though can always be searched for online. To find a counsellor that has won the approval of its clients and customers is to find a counsellor you know you can trust.

4 – Flexibility

Something else that must be taken into account is flexibility, as this may have a significant impact on the quality of service provided. For example, the counsellor should be willing and able to show at least a moderate degree of flexibility, when it comes to arranging appointment times and communications in general. In addition, it is also important to choose a counsellor that is willing to work in accordance with your available budget. It shouldn’t simply be a case of being provided with a list of prices and services, but rather being asked what they can do for you, and having the ideal package put together accordingly.

5 – Personality

Last but not least, it is important to remember that unless you ‘click’ with your chosen counsellor, it is unlikely that you will make the kind of progress you expect. Try to remember that as you are the customer and they are the service provider, you do not have to give any specific reason whatsoever for choosing not to do business with them. In addition, the fact that there are literally thousands of counsellors available across the region means that you are absolutely guaranteed to find that perfect fit, sooner or later. So if for any reason (or no reason you can think of) you simply do not find the personality or approach of any given counsellor to your liking, it’s in your best interests to walk away and look elsewhere.
